Biography:
After a corporate career in human resource management that included Vice Presidencies at Chase Manhattan Bank and American Express Corporation, Harvey left corporate life in 1986 to form a consulting firm serving owner and family-managed businesses.
This firm was called Fulcrum Executive Search, and the key to its success was the understanding about half of executive placements failed. The reason wasn’t because the hired executives were unskilled; the more likely cause was that the owner wasn’t emotionally ready to share leadership. Harvey instituted processes that upped the odds of success; in and since doing so has not had to honor his guarantee to replace any failed executive, without charge. With these processes, Harvey has reduced the risk inherent in executive search.
As Harvey began to understand the need for exit planning, he saw his contributions would come from helping owners understand the emotional side of transitions, and renamed his firm Fulcrum Transitions. He helps owners deal with succession issues, recruit talent to increase the value of their companies, and helping them plan how they can live productive and meaningful lives as they break ties with their businesses.
Harvey is active in the exit planning and family businesses spaces. He is President of the Philadelphia Chapter of the Exit Planning Exchange, served on the Board of the New England Chapter of the Family Firm Institute and now is active in the Mid-Atlantic Chapter.
Harvey’s BS is from Temple University and his MBA is from the University of Chicago. Harvey and Kathy live with a puppy named Peanut and are enjoying country living in Worton, near Chestertown Maryland.

Closing the Personal Value Gap
For the best personal outcome, owners must identify and bridge the gap between corporate value when they first contemplate an exit and value when the actual transaction takes place—not to mention after the sale. The time to dig a well is before you get thirsty, but in the midst of transferring the company’s ownership, personal planning often gets delayed or lost—a dangerous omission. The panel will examine case studies and share the real-world experiences of business owners and their heirs in the post-sale years.
